Tips on Staining Oak

Staining oak is not that difficult if you understand how to complete the task properly.  You want to be sure that you are carrying through with the activity in the appropriate way so that there are no visible lines and so forth.  This article will give you a few simple ideas that you can consider.  Following through with a few of these tips will help your oak look beautiful.

The first thing that you need to do is get the oak prepared and ready to stain.  You will do this by taking the time to sand the oak down before you begin.  You want to use a very course sand paper, then a medium and finally something very soft.  When you have completed this step you will need to take a damp cloth or sponge and wipe the oak off.  This will remove any of the dust that is on the oak.  It is very important to remember to sand with the grain of the oak and not against it.  If you sand incorrectly it will scratch the wood.   You do not want to do that.

If you spend some time looking at the hardware store you may notice that they sell something called a wood conditioner.  It is a good idea for you to purchase some of this because you will want to place this on the wood before you actually begin staining oak.  This product will make the wood smooth and it will help the wood receive the stain more evenly.  When you take the time to complete the steps that have been discussed so far, you will be working towards a wonderful finished product that you can be proud of.

Now you are ready to consider the specific stain that you want to use.  You first need to determine if you want to use water based or oil based.  Water based will clean up very easy and it will not leave a really bad smell in your house.  One the other hand, oil based stain will make your wood look better and it lasts longer.  It is well worth the consideration if you are willing to tolerate the smell.  You will want to have really good ventilation when using oil based stains.  Once you have determined which type of stain you want to use you will need to select a color.  When staining oak you will want to use a medium to light color because it will look best with the natural colors of the oak.

Take the time to stain the oak in even strokes.  You need a soft material for applying the stain.  Some people will use soft rags or old socks.  As long as it is soft, you can use just about anything.  Be sure that you go back over the wood and remove any extra stain that may be lying on the surface.  This is a very important step because you do not want any large puddles of stain to dry on the surface and make your job look uneven.  As long as you take your time, staining oak will be a wonderful and beautiful experience.

Staining oak is not something that needs to be complicated but as you can see, it may be time consuming.  The important steps that you want to remember include taking the time to sand your oak and removing any extra stain rather than letting it dry on the wood.  If you want to stain oak properly it is going to take some time.  You will be glad that you took the time to complete this task properly when you are finished and you can admire the finished project.
