All about Licorice Tea

Licorice tea is made from one of those herbs that has been used for centuries in Asia and the Mediterranean region but is still pretty much unknown in places like America. Licorice tea does not taste exactly like the black licorice sticks you might remember from childhood. That’s because most licorice candy is usually flavored with anise, a separate plant that is often used as a substitute for licorice. Anise typically has a stronger flavor.

Licorice is a perennial herb that grows in the Middle East, Southern China, and in such European countries as Italy, Greece, and Spain. The substance which the root yields is called glycyrrhizin acid and is very sweet, so some people do not further sweeten the tea itself.

White licorice tea is made from licorice extract blended with white tea, which comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant.

Herbalists think that white licorice tea helps the body to produce interferon, which boosts the immune system. It is also included among the list of products containing antioxidants, which have been proven to help fight several types of cancer, including prostate and colon varieties. Antioxidants also protect the body from the cell damage caused by free radicals released when food is broken down in the body or when it takes in harmful chemicals, such as pollution. Antioxidants are found in many vegetables and fruits, grains, nuts, fish and some kinds of meat,

Licorice tea is usually brewed just like normal tea, using licorice roots that can be obtained through health and natural food stores. Because it can be strong in taste, it is often blended with other flavors, such as ginger, mint, or additional spices.
