How To Cook Yams

Around the holidays many people begin to wonder how to cook yams.  These are also called sweet potatoes and they are a favorite side dish to many holiday meals.  They are very high in vitamins and minerals that they body needs in order to be healthy so they are wonderful choice with any meal.  I am sure that you have seen them covered with marshmallows at the Thanksgiving dinner table.  However, it is important to remember that they can be prepared in a healthy way also.

Learning how to cook yams is not really that complicated.  The easiest way to prepare them is to place them in the oven.  You will need to get them ready for this process before you simply place them into the oven.  You will do this by taking a vegetable brush and cleaning them.  This is going to remove any dirt and soil that may be on the vegetables.  Next, you will want to get a sharp knife and poke holes into the yams.  This is going to help them cook faster and it is going to release steam from them as they cook.  This is going to help ensure that they do not explode as they are cooking.

While you are getting the yams ready to be cooked, you can turn the oven on at 375 degrees and let that preheat.  Once the oven is hot and the yams are prepared, you will place them in a baking dish and into the oven.  You will leave them there for 40 minutes. You are going to know that they are finished cooking because the skin of the yam is going to start to look wrinkled.  At this time you will take them out of the oven and cut them open.  Now, add a healthy spread or a little bit of cinnamon to them for flavoring.

You may have heard people asking how to cook yams in a casserole form.  This is not very difficult either.  You will start by preparing the yams just like you did above.  You will then take them and cut them into long slices.  Layer them into a casserole dish that has been sprayed with nonstick spray.  You will then take some walnuts, healthy butter spread and cinnamon and cover them lightly.  Once you have done this, you will repeat the process over and over until you have the casserole size that you are looking for.  Finally, you will cover the dish with foil and place it into a 375 degree oven for roughly 40 minutes.

You may be wondering how to cook yams like you would prepare mashed potatoes.  You will clean and remove the skin of 5 medium sized yams.  Cut them into chunks and boil them on the stove for approximately 5 minutes.  While they are boiling you are going to prepare ¼ a cup a nutmeg, some healthy butter spread and one half of a cup of low fat milk.  Once the yams are finished cooking you will drain them and place them into a mixing bowl.  Begin mashing them by hand.  Slowly work in the nutmeg and milk until you have reached the desired consistency for your yams.  Serve and enjoy.
