How To Cook Leeks

Many people have often asked themselves how to cook leeks.  A fear of doing it incorrectly is often what puts many people off when it comes to preparing leeks.  However, there are so many different ways to prepare leeks that no one should be afraid to give it a try.

Before you cook the leeks you are going to need to wash and clean them so that they are ready to be cooked and eaten.   You will begin by cutting off the root end of the leek as well as approximately ¼ of the white part of the stem.  You will also cut the leaves back to the light green area rather than the darker green.  Then you will cut the leek down the center and open it wide.  Rinse it under cold water so that you can get out any sand or soil that may be stuck inside.   You do not want to have to taste this when you are ready to eat.  You will then place them on a paper towel and let them drain.

In order to understand how to cook leeks you are going to want to understand that you can use a leek in place of an onion in most recipes.  This is going to give a sweet flavor rather than the strong flavor of the onion.  However, it is not recommended that you replace a leek with an onion.  You can also cut up leeks, once they have been cleaned, and place then on salads if you wish.  This is a very simple way to prepare leeks and enjoy there flavor.

The most important thing to remember about how to cook leeks is that you should never over cook them when they are going to be served as a side dish.  They will become slimy and mushy if they are cooked to long.  When you test them to determine if they are done you want them to have a little bit of a resistance when you attempt to spear them.

How to cook leeks in the oven is often a popular question.  This is actually very easy.  Once the leeks have been cleaned you are going to want to put salt and pepper on them.  Baste them with butter and oil.  Place them under a broiler at 525 degrees.  You will need to check the leeks every five minutes to be sure that they are not burning.  As they begin to brown you will want to turn them and continue to baste them with the butter and oil.

Once the leeks have turned a brown color you are going to remove them from the oven and add chicken broth to where it covers the leeks half way.  You will then place them back into the oven and bake them at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.  You are going to need to turn them half way through this process.  If you are cooking really large leeks you will want to cook them a little longer and turn them one extra time.

Learning how to cook leeks is not very difficult as long as you clean them properly.  There are numerous different recipes related to leeks and you can season them any way you would like to.  The main things to remember is to make sure that they are cleaned well so that they do not taste like sand and to be sure you do not over cook them.  Also keep in mind, as previously mentioned, that you can also use them in place of onions in recipes if you would like.  This may be a good way to start getting use to them if you have never had them before.
