Grilling Potatoes

Helpful Tips For Grilling Potatoes

Grilling potatoes is probably one of the easiest things you will ever do.  They go well with any meal and almost everyone accepts them as a side dish when it is time to eat.  You really do not have to worry about messing them up because you simply cannot.  As long as you take the time to watch them and make sure that they do not burn, you are in good shape.

You will begin by simply washing the potatoes before you start preparing them.  You are going to want to get all of the dirt off of them before you do anything else.  You may also need to wash the eyes off of them.  When that is finished you are going to decide what exactly you want to do with them.  This becomes an important decision because you are going to want to decide if you want to keep the skins on them or the skin off of them.

Now, prepare the potato by taking the skin off (if that is what you have decided to do).  As previously mentioned, you have so many options for grilling potatoes that you are going to determine how you want to cut the potatoes.  You can slice them or dice them.  You can leave them whole or quarter them.  Select a seasoning for your potatoes and let them marinade or get them seasoned.

Get the grill turned on and ready to go.  It is best if it is preheated.  Some people will also recommend that you season the grates on the grill so that your potatoes will have even more flavor.  Once the grill is ready, you are going to take your potatoes and place them on the grate.  You will want to make sure that you have put them at an angle where they are not going to fall through into the flame.  You may also want to consider getting a grilling basket in which you can place the potatoes and put them on the grill over medium heat.  You can take the mixture that you used to season or marinade your potatoes and baste them while they are cooking.  Either way you decide to go, you are not going to want to walk far away from the grill because you do not want your potatoes to burn.  This is just about the only way you can ruin them.  Ideally, they are going to grill for roughly 20 minutes.  If you are not sure if they are done or not, you can take on off of the grill and taste it.  You want it to be soft.

Grilling potatoes can actually go much faster if you take the time to boil them slightly first on the stove.  You will then remove them for the hot water, drain them and then add your seasoning mixture.  The heat will sometimes help the potatoes soak up the seasoning and create a better flavor.  Once you have completed these steps, you will then slice them the way you want them to be prepared and then put them on the grill.  If you do it this way, you are only going to want to cook them for about five or ten minutes.  Again, be sure to pay close attention to them so that they do not burn.

When grilling potatoes, there is no right or wrong way.  As long as you do not burn them, you are good to go.  You can do anything you want with them and this makes them fun and interesting as a side dish.  There are so many options that it would be virtually impossible to get tired of them.  Think of potatoes the next time you are planning a meal.   Get creative; you may be glad you did.
