Family Fun Day

Inexpensive Ideas For A Family Fun Day

Planning regular activities, like a weekly or monthly family fun day, is a great way to connect with your loved ones. Countless studies have shown that families who spend time having fun together on a regular basis are closer, happier, and more well adjusted than those who do not.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy some quality time with your kin. Try these ideas to jumpstart your creativity. It’s fun to come up with new activities that everyone can get involved in.

Movie Night

Rent a movie or two and fill the living room with pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals (you can skip the animals if your kids are older). Serve popcorn and treats. Try making a new snack recipe together before you sit down to enjoy the show. Small children can easily assist in making rice crispy squares or savory snack mixes and older children can help with cookies or baked dips. Try picking a different theme for each movie night so you can rent movies and create your menu accordingly. You can let each family member take a turn choosing the theme or come to the decision collaboratively.

Day at The Museum

Choose a day once a month to visit a museum, art exhibition, or other educational display. Once you start looking around, you’ll find that most cities have planetariums, aquariums, museums, galleries, and many other intriguing places that will stimulate young minds and provide an excellent experience for the whole family. If you live near a college, find out if the campus houses any art or history museums that allow public access. Most do, and there are often family discounts on certain days of the month.

Road Trip

Find a not-so-distant destination to travel to. Decide beforehand how far you want to go and then choose a place within that distance that you might like to visit. Look at a map together and decide as a family, or let each person have a turn coming up with a place. This can be a really fun way to explore your surroundings. One month, travel to a small town and have lunch in a mom and pop diner. The next, pack a picnic and get out into nature.

Family Fitness Day

Going to the gym together can actually be more fun than it sounds like. Many universities and recreation centers have extensive facilities available for public use for a very small fee. Most of them offer all kinds of activities like swimming, weight training, basketball, and more.  There are often classes you can take in everything from yoga to self-defense. Some even have in-house childcare facilities for young kids. Open gymnasiums are a great place to hold a family game of kickball or volleyball. Family fitness days don’t always have to be held at the gym, either. Hit a local hiking trail or park, or go on a family bike ride. There are so many great ways to work out together, and mixing up your routine by doing different activities each time will keep it fresh and exciting.

There are a lot of ways that you can have a family fun day without spending much money. Of course, you can splurge sometimes and spend the day at a theme park or have dinner at an expensive restaurant. You may find, though, that you have just as much fun doing simple things together.

The important thing is that you make time for your family. This will show them that they are a priority in your life and that you enjoy their company. It can also inspire them to carry on the family fun day tradition into their own families.
